The only thing better than encouraging innovation is doing so with a positive purpose and Douglas Wall believes that innovation should always be driven with the intention of changing the world for the better. It’s that simple.
That’s why, as the Managing Director of Life Ventures, his focus has been to partner with teams that have a successful track record to help nurture and find funding for early-stage entrepreneurs. F&P was one-such established and successful team that Doug approached to work with him on the formation and organization of Light Ventures, his latest venture capital fund, as well as, help with the evaluation and due diligence of potential portfolio investments including the formation of an innovation platform.
And in order to cultivate aspiring world-changers, it’s often essential to turn to new generations. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the 2024 Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) Innovation Inspiration Workshop, Douglas Wall, alongside Light Ventures, helped facilitate innovation skills, mentorship, thousands of dollars in cash prizes and valuable wisdom and input from over 90 innovation judges comprising seasoned business executives, experienced CEOs, and thought-leaders from numerous industries as well as life.
The event was held October 8, 2024 on the PLNU campus, which is nestled on top of a hill overlooking the beautifully vast Pacific Ocean. Doug introduced Dr. Timothy Day, VP and General Manager of Daylight Solutions, whose speech to the students (and other mentors) was as hopeful and inspiring as his work in photonics. Specifically, his company develops and manufacturers quantum infared lasers used in a variety of applications, including aerospace, life sciences, manufacturing and defense technologies.
Dr. Day implored that every person in attendance “stay curious” and “grab the heart.” Having exemplified through his own work that a curious mind can lead to huge leaps for humankind, the optimism in the room was palpable. But he also conveyed that while “optimism is necessary, it’s not sufficient.” Big ideas and hard work are equally important.
The students then broke into smaller groups to brainstorm with mentors. Two of those mentors were Jerome Fogel and Constantine Potamianos, partners in Fogel and Potamianos (F&P) LLP. They joined a diverse group of experienced professionals to help impart guidance to impassioned, new entrepreneurs and help to determine the stand-outs.
Jerome shares how proud he was to take part in the event. “As I judge, I felt this tremendous amount of pride at being able to give back, as Constantine and I both did. But I also learned a lot from these students and their willingness to take risks, be open and learn and do things that I don’t remember doing in college.”
Constantine was impressed by so many of the competing teams and gives examples. “I ended up speaking with young entrepreneurs who wanted to reinvent sustainable concrete production, build easily-deployable scouting/provisions drones for disaster zones, and bring AI to more quickly and appropriately respond to 9-1-1 calls.”
It’s important to attorneys at F&P that they advise companies with whom they share values. Furthermore, they give a percentage of their profits back to the community to those in need. This made them a great fit to help mentor students because the idea is to leave the world a little bit better than how they found it. But ultimately, it was the students who inspired them. Jerome shares, “Constantine and I were there to support Doug and Light Ventures, but we – as often is the case – received a lot more than we gave.”
Constantine adds, “What a tribute to PLNU for educating and nurturing these students and for Doug Wall and Light Ventures in bringing this opportunity and experience to them.” He believes that if the other judges were anything like him, they “came away thinking that this young group is poised to do great things that will benefit all of us!”
